Sometimes a story can reveal truth as well as a lesson, which we can see in the way Jesus skillfully used parables and illustrations throughout his ministry. The story about Jesus and His disciples in Capernaum is a first step toward thinking about strengthening your child’s faith. As we move forward in the chapter, it will also be helpful to look more closely at what the Bible says—first about faith, and then specifically about a child’s faith.

It’s not my intention to do a comprehensive word study of biblical faith; instead, I want us to get a handle on biblical faith so we can better understand childhood faith. It’s also not my concern to explore theological topics such as justification by faith or faith versus works, and I will touch only briefly on childhood conversion. Rather, I want to identify several practical expressions of faith that your child can understand and develop in order to interact with the life of God in your home.
